749 og Image1c/50c 1910 Issue, Postage Due, Parcel Post Postage Due, Darrah Ty. II Overprints (374var / JQ5var). Ten items, incl. two pieces with two stamps, one with 1c and 4c (374, 377), other with 5c and 2c (378, 375) tied by "U.S. Postal Agency, Shanghai, China Rec'd" circular datestamp, also 6c (379), 8c (380), 50c (421) and 2c Postage Due tied by same handstamp on pieces, unused 8c, 50c (no gum), JQ3 and JQ5, Fine-Very Fine, a scarce and desirable group, according to philatelic lore John Darrah was the U.S. postal agent in China, in 1913, in collusion with some stamp collectors he overprinted one sheet each of the stamps in stock at the agency (we doubt this applies to the printed varieties), as this was unauthorized he was ordered by Washington not to sell them, he complied with the order however some had already gotten into the hands of the collectors (Image)
