EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 12-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY H GRILL.

This is an extremely difficult issue to obtain in sound used condition with choice centering. The P.S.E. Population Report contains only 16 used stamps and only two grade as high as 85.

VERY FINE AND CHOICE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 ONE-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE ISSUE. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE I GRILL, WHICH HAS JUST BEEN ELEVATED TO A MAJOR CATALOGUE NUMBER.

Starting with the 2013 Scott U.S. Specialized Catalogue the I Grills have been elevated to major catalogue number status. Collectors will now have to acquire these I Grills in their quest for completeness. We have only offered three other unused 1c I Grills since we started keeping our detailed records.

FINE. ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED COVERS BEARING THE NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY 15-CENT WITH THE RARE I GRILL.

Ronald A. Burns records 13 used off-cover, two unused and two covers with the 15c I Grill, for a total of 17 items.

Accompanied by 17 pages of research notes by Ronald Burns detailing the grill characteristics, the correspondence, the ship marking and history of the ship, and stamp procurement from the U.S. Consul in Panama.

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A RARE MINT NEVER-HINGED POSITION PIECE OF THE 1870 24-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY ISSUE FROM THE FAMOUS PLATE NUMBER BLOCK THAT WAS BROKEN.

This pair represents the right half of the Mint N.H. plate number block of four that was part of the Walter C. Klein collection and was last sold in our 1998 Rarities sale. Sadly, after the Rarities sale it was broken into two singles and this pair. The bottom left stamp was offered in our Silver Lake sale (Sale 866, lot 84) and the top left plate number single was offered in our Whitman sale, where it realized $40,000 (Sale 968A, lot 191). Those two singles and this pair are the only Mint N.H. examples of Scott 153 contained in Power Search.

EXTREMELY FINE. THE 1870 30-CENT NATIONAL UNGRILLED ISSUE IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT OF ALL BANK NOTE ISSUES TO FIND IN SOUND, WELL-CENTERED, ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION. THIS IS THE HIGHEST GRADED EXAMPLE WE HAVE OFFERED.

During the past 15 years, we have offered a few superb original-gum examples of National and Continental 30c Bank Notes (Scott 143, 154 and 165). Included in this total is a handful of the Continental printing, Scott 165, which is distinguished from its National Ungrilled counterpart by shade and the shape of the perforations. For the Ungrilled National printing, Scott 154, we have offered fewer than five hinged stamps comparable to the condition of the example offered here. This is one of the most difficult of all the Bank Note issues to find in such superb condition.

With 2005 P.S.E. certificate (OGph, XF 90, SMQ $14,500.00). This is the only hinged example of this issue graded 90 in the P.S.E. Population Report. There is also one graded 95, as well as the unique Mint N.H. example graded 90 from our 2009 Whitman sale. (Image)

Our recently updated census records for Scott 197 contain 32 certified examples. Of these, nine have faults, leaving only 23 sound or potentially sound examples (seven have not been examined in many years). Very few are as well-centered with wide margins as the one offered here.
