12 E Image24c Black, Large Die Essay on India (37-E1). 46 x 60mm, crisp impression and deep shade, very trivial crease at top left edge not mentioned on accompanying certificate

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE LARGE-SIZE EXAMPLE OF THE TOPPAN, CARPENTER, CASILEAR & CO. ESSAY FOR THE 24-CENT 1857 ISSUE.

This essay shows subtle differences from the die used to create the transfer roll for the issued 24c 1857 stamp. Apart from the color, the most noticeable difference is the much darker etching of the vignette background. We have offered only one other example of this rare essay since our 1999 Finkelburg sale, and it was cut down to a large stamp size (ex Lake Shore).
