EXTREMELY FINE GEM PAIR ON A REMARKABLY FRESH COVER. THIS IS, WITHOUT QUESTION, THE FINEST-QUALITY COVER BEARING A PAIR OF THE 10-CENT ROSE LITHOGRAPH. ONE OF THE GREAT RARITIES OF CONFEDERATE GENERAL ISSUES.
Stanley B. Ashbrook wrote on back "C.S.A. 10c Rose - V.F. H. Pair In Fresh Early Rose Color. Used July 31, 1862 - A Double 10c Rate - From Newbern C.H. Va. To Richmond. In My Opinion This Cover Is Genuine In Every Respect And A Very Valuable And Rare Gem. Stanley B. Ashbrook. Feb. 6, 1956." What Ashbrook describes as an "early Rose" is the distinctive Carmine Rose.
Ex Simon and McCarren. With 2000 P.F. certificate (Image)
