2310 TC Image5c Pink, De La Rue, Large Die Trial Color Proof on Glazed Card (6TC1d). 93 x 60mm, bright color, faint toning mostly confined to edges, Very Fine and extremely rare, ex Murphy, for some reason Scott prices the Pink trial color proofs the same as Black at $900.00 (unchanged since before 1997), if our auction history is any indication this comparison of relative supply is incorrect, as we have sold only one other example in Pink since 1993, while during that time we have sold more than 20 in Black, C.S.A. A SPECTACULAR RARITY OF CONFEDERATE ESSAYS AND PROOFS. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS COMPOSITE DIE PROOF, PRESENTED BY DE LA RUE TO NOTED PHILATELIST, MAJOR E.B. EVANS.

Edward Benjamin Evans (1846-1922), known as "Major", was one of 19th and early 20th Century England's most distinguished philatelists, and a prolific philatelic writer. He was noted for his collections of Confederate States, as well as Mauritius (including his 1878 acquisition of the One Penny "Post Office" Mauritius cover addressed to Alcide Marquay, now in the British Library's Tapling Collection). His Confederate collection was purchased by Nassau Stamp Company's John Klemann about 1914. This composite proof was presented to him by De La Rue, printer of the C.S.A. typographed 6c and 1c stamps.

Ex Murphy and from our 1983 Rarities sale. 2012 C.S.A. Catalogue value $8,500.00 (Image)

2319 E Image2c Blue, With Framelines, Trial Color Die Proof on Wove (8TC1). Two large margins, others ample to clear, showing complete framelines on all sides, rich color, slight thin

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT ENGRAVED PROOF IN BLUE WITH FRAMELINES.

The various catalogue listings for the 2c trial color proofs with framelines are somewhat confusing and not altogether complete. All of the known examples of the 2c Engraved essay/proof have framelines, unlike the issued stamp. For this reason they should be classified as essays. However, the Scott, Dietz and C.S.A. Catalogues list them as trial color proofs, and we have maintained that tradition here to avoid adding to the confusion. The Blue offered here is unlisted in Scott Catalogue, which does list the Black but makes no mention of framelines. The 1986 Dietz Catalogue listed this frameline proof in Black, but not Blue. The 2012 C.S.A. Catalogue expanded on Dietz and lists this Blue trial color proof with framelines, but it eliminated the Black with framelines, which also exists and is offered in this sale as lot 2209 (another Black showing two framelines is offered in lot 2320).

Ex Hall and acquired by the family from the New England Stamp Co. in 1934. Offered to the market for only the second time in more than 75 years. Pictured in C.S.A. Catalogue on page 357. Unlisted in Scott. C.S.A. Catalogue value (Image)
