Across-the-Lines Private Express Mail
Lot Sym. Lot Description
2284 c ImageHarnden's Express Savannah Apr. 26 (1861). Bold strike of red oval datestamp on cover to Paris, France, manuscript "Paid 2/-" (two bits, or 25c) express fee, the original 15c postage in U.S. 1857 Issue stamps was unfortunately torn off the cover, part strike of "New York Paid 6 Apr." credit datestamp present below the missing piece, Paris receiving datestamp (Apr. 18 date must be in error) and red boxed "P.D.", a printed reproduction of what the postage would have looked like is placed in missing part of the cover, this would be a spectacular and valuable cover if a stamp-collecting vandal had not gotten to it, still a magnificent strike of the scarce Harnden Savannah oval on a precursor express cover, Harnden merged with Adams Express in 1854 but Adams continued to use the Harnden name in some Georgia towns through late 1861 (Image)
