38 c ImageMacon Ga., 5c Black on Yellow Wove (53X4). Huge margins, uncancelled, Macon Ga. Jun. 5” (1861) circular datestamp, Paid” and small 5” handstamps on yellow cover with Lanier House green embossed cameo oval corner card, W. Eaves imprint, to Mrs. Peter J. Williams in Milledgeville Ga., backflap removed

EXTREMELY FINE. A SPECTACULAR FIRST-WEEK USE OF THE MACON 5-CENT PROVISIONAL ISSUE ON A BEAUTIFUL HOTEL CAMEO CORNER CARD COVER.

Based on dated examples, it is certain that the 5c with plain border was the first stamp issued in Macon, despite its Scott listing as 53X4. Almost all of the recorded covers are dated during the first half of June 1861, including an uncancelled stamp on a cover dated June 1, the first day of the Confederate postal system.

Covers dated in early June show use of the Paid” and small 5” rate handstamps in conjunction with the provisional adhesives, which were sometimes left uncancelled. Two other covers addressed to Mrs. Peter J. Williams in the same hand have Macon 53X4 stamps tied by the datestamp, the existence of which proves that the sender possessed and used the provisional issue.

Illustrated in Dietz book (page 261). Ex Stonewall” (Kuphal), Haas and Ballard. With 1992 and 2009 P.F. certificates. (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. ONLY EIGHT EXAMPLES OF THE MACON 5-CENT FLORALBORDERED PROVISIONAL ON YELLOW LAID PAPER (SCOTT 53X6) ARE RECORDED. THIS SUPERB CORNER-MARGIN STAMP IS ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES.

This stamp was removed from its cover (addressed to Howell Cobb) and identified as the rare Laid Paper variety, Scott 53X6. The original cover accompanies.

41 c ImageMacon Ga., 5c Black on Light Blue Green Wove, Comma After Office” (53X1). Large margins to clear at upper right, bright color, tied by Macon Ga. Dec. 2” (1861) double-circle datestamp on yellow cover to McWilliams & Roberts in Griffin Ga. with Jos. E. Wells, Dealer in Hardware” blue cameo corner card in the shape of a padlock, illustration of an anvil and hammer, W. Eaves imprint, Carhart & Curd,” label affixed over company name, reflecting the purchase of Wells’ business

EXTREMELY FINE. AN EXTRAORDINARY EAVES CAMEO DESIGN USED WITH THE MACON FOUR-LINE PROVISIONAL ISSUE — A SPECTACULAR COVER WHICH HAS THE ADDED PHILATELIC RARITY OF THE COMMA AFTER OFFICE” VARIETY.

The Macon provisional with Post Office, Macon, Ga.” added to the setting is very rare on cover (Peter W. W. Powell reported 24 on cover in the Confederate Philatelist, Sep.-Oct. 2000). Only three advertising covers are known with this stamp, in addition to four or five printed college covers. This is the only recorded example of the Comma After Office” variety on an advertising cover.

Joseph E. Wells enlisted in the Confederate Army on April 20, 1861, which explains the sale of his business to the large hardware firm, Carhart & Curd.
