The Scott Catalogue prices the Knoxville 5c provisional with manuscript cancel at $600.00 versus $1,400.00 with handstamped cancel. In our opinion, the type of cancel is subordinate to soundness in valuing these stamps.

EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF SIX RECORDED COVERS BEARING THE LIMESTONE SPRINGS POSTMASTER’S PROVISIONAL STAMP, AND ONE OF ONLY THREE DOUBLERATE FRANKINGS. MORE IMPORTANTLY, THESE TWO STAMPS ARE THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS PROVISIONAL ISSUE ON WHITE PAPER, SCOTT 121X2.

There are six recorded covers bearing the simple 5” handstamped adhesive provisional used from Limestone Springs. Five covers bear seven copies of the 121X1 Blue paper stamp, including two circular die-cut singles (described as Green” in our 1972 Weatherly sale) on separate covers, one rectangular-cut single on cover, and two covers with two rectangular-cut singles each. All five covers were sent by Lizzie E. M. Dean from the Limestone Springs Female High School. Four are addressed to Corp. Edward J. Dean, a member of the 5th S.C. Regiment’s Spartan Rifles.” The other is addressed to Lucy E. Simpson at Lauren’s Court House, S.C. (possibly addressed by someone other than Lizzie Dean).

The sixth recorded Limestone Springs provisional cover is offered here. It is addressed to Belton O. Mauldin, a member of a prominent South Carolina family for whom the town of Mauldin is named (it lies about 50 miles from Limestone Springs and 28 miles from Spartanburg). This cover undoubtedly originated from a young lady attending the Limestone Springs Female High School. Private Mauldin was a member of Co. K, 2nd S.C. Cavalry, and his docketing notation indicates that at the time he was encamped at Gen. William H. C. Whiting’s headquarters. The June 3, 1862, receipt date is just two days after The Battle of Seven Pines, which took place from May 31 to June 1 in Henrico County, Virginia.

The two stamps on this cover are the only recorded examples of the Limestone Springs provisional on White paper (Scott 121X2). As such, this cover represents the only opportunity to acquire these major philatelic rarities.

EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS THE FINEST SINGLE FRANKING AMONG THE SEVEN RECORDED COVERS BEARING THE LIVINGSTON PROVISIONAL -- A STRIKING PICTORIAL STAMP THAT DEPICTS THE SOUTHERN SHIELD AND ALLEGORICAL FIGURES. ONE OF THE MOST OUTSTANDING OF ALL CONFEDERATE COVERS.

There are six single-franked covers, one of which is disfigured. The other four are attractive, but none equals this magnificent cover’s quality. Stanley B. Ashbrook described this item as really a superb cover and the finest Livingston that I have ever seen.” (Stamp Specialist, Black Book, 1945)

This cover was purchased privately before World War II by Harold C. Brooks, and when the Brooks collection was dispersed, this Livingston (one of two owned by Brooks) was sold privately to A. Earl Weatherly. In 1963 Charles and Lucy Kilbourne purchased the cover directly from Weatherly. In the 1999 Kilbourne sale it was acquired by William H. Gross, and in the Shreves-Spink 2010 Gross sale it was bought by Mr. Sharrer’s agent.
