1869 Pictorial Issue Inverts (Scott 119b-121b)
Lot Sym. Lot Description
3199   Image15c Brown & Blue, Ty. II, Center Inverted (119b). Rich colors on crisp paper, black cork cancel and French double-circle datestamp at bottom, also red transit marking at bottom, small bit of manuscript in left margin, completely sound

FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE SOUND EXAMPLE OF THE 15-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL INVERT. ALSO VERY DESIRABLE WITH THE IDENTIFIABLE FRENCH TRANSIT MARKING.

Our census of 15c 1869 Inverts, recently updated at our website at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/119b/119b.pdf , contains three unused and 96 used (one in the British Library's Tapling collection and one in the New York Public Library's Miller Collection). Only nine are confirmed as sound, including this example, and virtually all have perfs either close or touching on one or more sides. This is also the only example listed in our census with a French transit marking.

Census No. 119b-CAN-89. Ex Col. Green. With 1972 and 2006 P.F. certificates. With 2009 P.S.E. certificate (VG 50, SMQ $30,000.00) (Image)

3200   Image24c Green & Violet, Center Inverted (120b). Deep rich colors and detailed impressions, bright paper, rosette cancel leaves vignette clearly visible, tiny trivial corner crease at bottom right mentioned on P.F. certificates, but not on P.S.E. certificate

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN UNUSUALLY ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE OF THE 24-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE INVERT. ONLY 89 USED EXAMPLES OF THE 24-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL INVERT ARE RECORDED.

Our census of 24c 1869 Inverts, recently updated at our website at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/120b/120b.pdf , contains four unused, 83 used singles, one used pair, one on cover and the unique block of four, for a total of 94 copies of the perforated 24c Invert.

Census No. 120b-CAN-55. Ex Seymour, Ishikawa, Dauer and "Beverly Hills". Small "HFC" (Colman) backstamp. With 2011 P.F. and P.S.E. certificates (F 70, SMQ $63,500.00). Only one has graded higher (at 75). The Scott value is for "fine centered copies with only minimal faults." (Image)

3201   Image30c Blue & Carmine, Center Inverted (121b). Unusually bright colors and fine impressions of the flags and central design, exceptionally well-defined grill, bold red Leaf cancellation at the bottom of the stamp which leaves the inverted flags completely unobscured, inconsequential corner crease at top left

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. THE FINEST OF THE FIVE RECORDED 30-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL INVERTS CANCELLED IN RED.

The red Leaf cancel was used in New York City on Supplementary Mail. It is scarce on the 30c 1869, and only five of the 40 recorded 30c used Inverts are cancelled in red.

Our recently updated census of 30c 1869 Inverts, available at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/121b/121b.pdf , contains a total of 47 stamps, including 7 unused and 40 used (one in the Miller Collection at the New York Public Library).

Census No. 121b-CAN-28. Ex Colonel Green and Rose. With 1981 and 1997 P.F. certificates. With 2012 P.S.E. certificate (Fine 70). Scott Retail without premium for red cancellation. (Image)
