94 c Image3c Blue Green, Double Impression (207c). Clear doubling of the stamp at bottom, tied by light strike of cork cancel , neat "Mechum's River Va. May 29, 1883" circular datestamp on cover to Cobham Depot Va., few perf faults at bottom, cover slightly reduced at left

FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS DOUBLE IMPRESSION RARITY, AND THE ONLY EXAMPLE ON COVER. A GREAT RARITY.

Our list of double impressions is included as an appendix to this catalogue. Most double impressions occur when the first impression is made and found to be inadequate. The paper is then put in the press a second time, when it receives the heavier impression. It is a common misconception that the weaker impression is the second one.

Our census of Scott 207c includes only the three examples, illustrated below and available at our website at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/207c/207c.pdf . No others are contained in the records of the Philatelic Foundation, and we did not find any in our search of past auction catalogues.

Ex Wagshal. With 1989 P.F. certificate. Listed but unpriced in Scott as used, and unlisted in Scott as on cover. The example with part plate number realized $25,000 hammer in one of our 2004 auctions, and the other off-cover example realized $9,500 hammer in our October 2006 sale. (Image)

95   Image6c Rose (208). Gorgeous centering with well-balanced margins, perfs intact and with significant part of adjoining stamps at sides, brilliant color, neat strikes of Philadelphia oval registry cancels, Extremely Fine Gem, a superb stamp in every respect, with 1994 P.F. and 2009 P.S.E. certificates (XF 90, SMQ $250.00), in our opinion this is undergraded (Image)

99   Image1c Ultramarine (212). Beautiful centering with Jumbo margins all around, radiant color, neat strike of New York oval registry cancel, Extremely Fine Gem, a phenomenal stamp in every respect and a stamp of massive proportions, with 1999 P.F. and 2009 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95 Jumbo, SMQ $135.00 as 95, $390.00 as 98), only one has graded higher to date (at 98J) and only two others share this grade (which is the next-highest awarded), we are surprised this did not grade higher -- the 98 Jumbo was offered in our Sale 959 and the stamp offered here compares very favorably to that one (Image)

Vivid color and detailed impression, well-proportioned margins, unusually wide and balanced, neat face-free strike of "1889" oval handstamp, Extremely Fine Gem, especially desirable with the contemporary year-dated cancel, the 4c color was changed to avoid confusion with the 2c, the color of which had been changed from brown to green, Brookman notes that "it is surprisingly difficult to find in prime used condition" (Image)
