EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. THE 2-CENT AMERICAN BANK NOTE STAMP WITH DOUBLE IMPRESSION (SCOTT 183a) IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL DOUBLE IMPRESSIONS -- ONLY TWO ARE KNOWN.

Our list of double impressions is included as an appendix to this catalogue. Most double impressions occur when the first impression is made and found to be inadequate. The paper is then put in the press a second time, when it receives the heavier impression. It is a common misconception that the weaker impression is the second one.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS PHENOMENAL STAMP IS WITHOUT QUESTION ONE OF THE FINEST IN EXISTENCE. IT HAS BEEN GRADED GEM 100 JUMBO BY P.S.E., WHICH IS THE HIGHEST GRADE POSSIBLE.

This stamp, with its mathematically perfect centering, Jumbo margins, long perforations, detailed impression and fresh color, is truly remarkable. With 1993 P.F. and 2009 P.S.E. certificates (Gem 100 Jumbo, unpriced in SMQ above the grade of 98, SMQ $425.00 as 98). Only one other shares this grade, the other example was offered in our sale of the Tahoe Collection and its margins, while perfectly centered, are smaller than the example offered here. This is also one of only six used Bank Note stamps (five different Scott numbers) between Scott 134 and 218 to achieve this perfect grade (three of the five are offered in this collection). (Image)

Our records contain just four copies of this stamp with double impression, illustrated below and available at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/184b/184b.pdf . One has a heavy cancel and a repair, and has not been seen for some time. Another has never been certified. The third shows only partial doubling, and is centered to top left with a small corner crease and tear.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THE 1879 6-CENT AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY ISSUE IS VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND WITH SUCH JUMBO MARGINS AND IN SUCH PRISTINE USED CONDITION. THIS EXCEPTIONAL STAMP HAS BEEN GRADED SUPERB 98 JUMBO BY P.S.E. -- THIS IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED TO DATE BY FAR AND THE ONLY EXAMPLE TO ACHIEVE THIS GRADE.

This issue is difficult to find used or unused in such superb condition. There always seems to be a trade-off between centering and other condition factors. The stamp offered here, with Jumbo centered margins, long perfs, bright color and a clear cancel, is the finest we have ever encountered.

With 2003 P.F. and 1994 and 2009 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98 Jumbo, unpriced in SMQ above the grade of 98, SMQ $1,150.00 as 98). This is the highest grade awarded to date in any category. (Image)

This is the only example of this stamp in any category to achieve the highest grade possible on the grading scale. The margin size is significantly greater than the Mint N.H. copy graded Gem 100 and offered in our sale of the Whitman collection. This is also one of only six used Bank Note stamps (five different Scott Nos.) between Scott 134 and 218 to achieve this perfect grade (two others are also offered in this collection).
