Lot Sym. Lot Description
65   Image1c Ultramarine (156). Jumbo margins all around, radiant color beautifully complemented by blue crossroads cancel struck at upper right which leaves portrait and denomination clearly visible, Extremely Fine Gem, with 2007 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90 Jumbo, SMQ $42.00 as 90, $185.00 as 95), it appears that P.S.E. did not add points for eye appeal as specified in their grading guide (Image)

67   Image2c Brown, Double Impression (157d). Dramatic and strong double impression of the entire design, rich color, light face-free strike of red circular datestamp, tiny perf thin and corner perf crease at bottom left not mentioned on accompanying certificate

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED DOUBLE IMPRESSION OF THE 1873 2-CENT CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE ISSUE. THE IMPRESSIONS ARE DRAMATIC AND BOTH ARE CLEARLY DISTINGUISHABLE, AND ITS APPEARANCE IS ENHANCED BY THE UNOBTRUSIVE BUT CLEARLY VISIBLE RED COLORED CANCELLATION. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST STRIKING DOUBLE IMPRESSIONS OF ANY ISSUE WE HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED.

Our list of double impressions is included as an appendix to this catalogue. Most double impressions occur when the first impression is made and found to be inadequate. The paper is then put in the press a second time, when it receives the heavier impression. It is a common misconception that the weaker impression is the second one.

For most double impressions the alignment between the two impressions is only slightly off, which can cause a blurring effect. In the case of the unique example offered here, there is a clear separation between both impressions. It is not only unique, but it is also one of the finest examples of a double impression.

Ex Stephen Brown and Drucker. Noted in Brookman on p. 246, where he calls it "a striking double impression, cancelled in red". With 1984 P.F. certificate. Scott Catalogue value is outdated. (Image)

69   Image3c Green, Double Impression (158j). Clear and dramatic doubling throughout the entire design, wide margins on three sides, quartered cork cancel struck at center still leaves entire design clearly visible

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. THIS IS EASILY THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF THE 1873 3-CENT CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE ISSUE WITH A DOUBLE IMPRESSION. OUR CENSUS CONTAINS ONLY SEVEN EXAMPLES OF THIS GREAT RARITY, AND THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE IN SOUND CONDITION WITH ACCEPTABLE MARGINS.

Our list of double impressions is included as an appendix to this catalogue. Most double impressions occur when the first impression is made and found to be inadequate. The paper is then put in the press a second time, when it receives the heavier impression. It is a common misconception that the weaker impression is the second one.

In many double impressions the alignment between the two impressions is only slightly off, which can cause a blurring effect. In the example offered here there is a clear separation between both impressions.

Our census of Scott 158j, illustrated below, records only seven examples of this rarity. Of the seven, one has a previous certificate as genuine and another as a kiss print (both as sound), but we consider it to be genuine since the P.F. has clarified their standards since that most recent certificate was issued.

Ex Floyd. With 1978 and 2001 P.F. certificates. (Image)

70   Image3c Green, Printed on Both Sides (158k). Impression on back inverted in relation to the one on the front and almost perfectly aligned, front of stamp with bright color nicely contrasted by purple target cancel, light diagonal crease

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1873 3-CENT CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE COMPANY ISSUE. ONLY TWO OR THREE ARE KNOWN. THIS IS ONE OF THE GREAT RARITIES OF PRINTED-ON-BOTH-SIDES VARIETIES.

Engraved stamps printed on both sides usually have a poor impression on one side and a second, complete impression on the other. They probably occurred when a sheet was printed without proper moistening, which prevented the paper from picking up the ink in the recessed lines of the engraved plate. If the sheet was turned 180 degrees before being put on the press a second time, the two impressions will be inverted in relation to each other.

Our list of printed-on-both-sides stamps is included as an appendix to this catalogue. All examples of this variety are reported to have weak impressions on back -- this is reported to be the finest. A pair was offered in our 1967 Rarities sale, but was not photographed. A single was subsequently offered in the 1978 Kaufmann Gems sale, which might have been part of the pair (as might the example offered here). We are therefore unable to determine whether two or three copies exist.

Aside from a single known example of the 2c 1887 Issue (Scott 213), the 3c is the only Bank Note denomination known with a printed on both sides variety. It is only found on the 1870 National Bank Note issue (Scott 147) and the 1873 Continental Bank Note issue (Scott 158, with secret mark). The 3c Grilled Bank Note issue is listed in Scott Catalogue as printed on both sides, but none has ever been seen, and Scott Catalogue does not have information on its listing in their reference files, so it should probably be delisted (Brookman references it).

With 2005 P.F. certificate. Undercatalogued in Scott -- the 3c 1869 Pictorial printed on both sides catalogues $55,000.00 and earlier Scott numbers of this variety also have high Scott Catalogue value. (Image)

75   Image15c Yellow Orange (163). Vibrant color as fresh as the day it was printed, phenomenal centering with unusually wide and balanced margins, face-free cork cancel at upper right, long and full perforations all around

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1873 15-CENT CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE COMPANY ISSUE. EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST IN EXISTENCE.

The 15c American Bank Note issue, Scott 189, can be found with wide margins and is a much more common issue. This availability causes many collectors to infer that earlier issues such as the 1873 Continental printing are also readily available with wide margins. This is simply not the case. A review using Power Search of used and unused copies to review margin size and centering for the issue found almost none which compare favorably to the example offered here.

Ex Renne, Morris and Mayer. With 1985 and 1994 P.F. certificates. (Image)
