The Harvey Mirsky Collection of the United States 1847 Issue continued...

Used Multiples
Lot Sym. Lot Description
2038 bl Image5c Red Brown (1). Reconstructed block of six from vertical strips of Pos. 79/89/99R1 and 80/90/100R1 showing Double Transfer Types A (Position 80) and B (Position 90), mostly large margins all around, rich Deep Brown color and impression from the first printing, each with vivid red grid cancel, top two stamps faintly creased

THE UNIQUE "ASHBROOK RECONSTRUCTION," ORIGINALLY TWO VERTICAL STRIPS AND NOW FORMING ONE EXTREMELY FINE AND INCOMPARABLE SHOWPIECE.

The left strip was owned by Stanley B. Ashbrook. In 1918, while viewing the Judge Emerson collection, he realized that a similar strip owned by the judge had once adjoined his own. The reconstructed block is illustrated in the Brookman book (Volume 1, page 43). Probably fewer than a half-dozen vertical strips are available on or off cover.

It is reported that only one other 5c multiple exists with both double transfers -- a pair from Positions 80 and 90R -- but the pair is cut into at bottom and right.

Ex Emerson, Ashbrook, Newbury and Dr. Morris. With 1980 Freidl and 1983 P.F. certificates. 1996 Calvet M. Hahn analysis accompanies. (Image)

2040   Image5c Brown (1). Horizontal strip of three, large margins to clear except slightly in at bottom right, dark shade and sharp impression, orange-red grid cancels, right stamp pressed vertical crease and a small rub in the middle of the center stamp, otherwise Fine, multiples of the 5c 1847 larger than a pair are very scarce, and strips of three are especially scarce since the triple 5c rate was only in effect from July 1847 to March 1849 (Image)

2041   Image10c Black (2). Horizontal strip of three, large margins to full, intense shade and impression nicely complemented by red New York square grid cancels, trace of manuscript at top, right stamp expertly sealed tear at bottom

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE USED STRIP OF THREE OF THE 10-CENT 1847 ISSUE.

Pairs or two singles would often be used on double 10c rate covers, but strips of three, blocks of four or other large multiples were infrequently used. As an indication of the rarity of 10c 1847 multiples larger than a pair, Scott assigns a value of $2,800.00 for a pair, but $10,250.00 for a strip of three. (Image)

2042   Image10c Black (2). Positions 98-100R1, horizontal strip of three, huge margins to clear including part of adjoining stamp at left, each with manuscript squiggle cancel, right stamp expert repair at bottom described on accompanying certificate as small tear and horizontal crease

This strip undoubtedly originated on a 30c Via Panama rate cover. The same type of manuscript cancellation is found on the 10c strip of three on cover offered in this sale as lot 2259.

With 1976 P.F. certificate. Scott Retail as a strip, disregarding pen cancel (Image)
