VERY FINE. CONSIDERED BY MANY TO BE THE MOST OUTSTANDING AND DESIRABLE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE ADVERTISING COVER EXTANT.

Both potassium bicarbonate and sodium bicarbonate were marketed under the name "saleratus" in the 1840's. The Syracuse Saleratus Manufacturing Company was operated by James Taylor & Co., presumably a relation of the addressee, E. Taylor. In 1848 the Oswego Starch Factory was built by the firm of Kingsford and Son.
