A VERY FINE AND EXTREMELY RARE COMBINATION OF THE 1847 ISSUE AND SWARTS "ROUGH AND READY" LOCAL POST STAMP, INSPIRED BY ZACHARY TAYLOR'S PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN. ONLY THREE SUCH COMBINATION COVERS ARE REPORTED.

In 1848, during the Presidential campaign, Bouton's introduced a stamp featuring the candidate "Rough and Ready" Zachary Taylor. After Swarts bought Bouton's in early 1849, they continued using the same portrait but with the Swarts name. As such, this is the only stamp used to carry mail featuring the portrait of a sitting president. This cover was carried by Swarts to the New York and New Haven Railroad terminal where it entered the mails.

Ex Matthies, Wyer and Garrett. With 1990 P.F. certificate. (Image)
