EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS THE EARLIEST REPORTED USE OF THE BUFFALO "STEAM-BOAT" FANCY MARKING. A GORGEOUS COVER.
According to the Alexander book, this marking was applied at Buffalo to non-contract steamboat or ship mail. In this case, the sender applied the stamp to what was originally intended to be a stampless cover with a box-charge notation. After affixing the stamp, he crossed out the number and wrote "Paid".
Illustrated and described in an article in Chronicle 218 (copy accompanies). Ex Hayes and Haas. With 2002 P.F. certificate (Image)
