EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS THE EARLIEST REPORTED USE OF THE BUFFALO "STEAM-BOAT" FANCY MARKING. A GORGEOUS COVER.

According to the Alexander book, this marking was applied at Buffalo to non-contract steamboat or ship mail. In this case, the sender applied the stamp to what was originally intended to be a stampless cover with a box-charge notation. After affixing the stamp, he crossed out the number and wrote "Paid".
