Fancy and Unusual Cancellations on Cover
Lot Sym. Lot Description
2307 c Image5c Dark Brown (1 var). Large margins to clear, cancelled by red Scarab fancy cancel, matching "St. Johnsbury Vt. Sep. 7" circular datestamp on blue 1848 folded letter to Bath N.H., stamp with tear at bottom

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE FAMOUS ST. JOHNSBURY SCARAB FANCY CANCEL ON COVER. THIS IS THE EARLIEST REPORTED USE OF THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE FROM ST. JOHNSBURY AND THE EARLIEST REPORTED USE OF THE SCARAB FANCY CANCEL.

Fancy "killer" cancels are extremely rare in the 1847-51 period. The term "killer" to describe the cancel was actually used by New York Postmaster Robert H. Morris. Although fancy rate markings from the pre-stamp era were used to cancel 1847 stamps, fancy cancels created for the specific purpose of "killing" stamps did not become popular until the 1850's. The more distinctive designs are the St. Johnsbury Vt. Scarab, Trenton N.J. Star and Binghamton N.Y. Herringbone. The Alexander book lists eight genuine uses of the 5c on cover with this cancel.

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE FAMOUS ST. JOHNSBURY SCARAB FANCY CANCEL ON THE 10-CENT 1847 ISSUE.

Only eight or nine 10c covers are known with the Scarab fancy cancel. A note on back states this was offered in a 1947 Mozian auction with three others cancelled by the Scarab.

FRESH AND VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THE DESIRABLE BINGHAMTON HERRINGBONE CANCELLATION. VERY FEW FANCY CANCELLATIONS ARE KNOWN ON THE 1847 ISSUE.

According to the Alexander Census book, the postmaster in Binghamton ordered his first supply of the 1847 stamps from the postmaster of New York, Robert Morris, rather than through official channels from the Post Office Department, as he wanted to see whether local residents would adopt their use. Since the order was not placed through official channels, he did not receive the customary 7-bar cancelling device and instead made his own.
