VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE HORIZONTAL PAIR WITH THE LEFT STAMP SHOWING THE TYPE C DOUBLE TRANSFER. ONLY TWO PAIRS ARE RECORDED.

In the August 1995 Chronicle, Jerome S. Wagshal summarized previous articles on this double transfer. It was first discovered by Dan Hammatt around 1920. Mr. Wagshal recorded a total of 13-1/2 copies (one is a half-stamp in a strip), including only two pairs. He also echoes Ashbrook's theory that this and the Double Transfer Type D were created when the plate was reworked sometime in late 1850 and were only part of the Fifth Delivery from RWH&E in December 1850. This would account for their scarcity compared to the Type A and B double transfers, and it seems to be confirmed by the two examples known on cover, which were described by Ashbrook as 1851 uses. The distinctive Orange Brown shade also points to the Fifth Delivery.

Ex Caspary, Rust, Stollnitz and Dr. Morris. With 1996 P.F. certificate. Scott Retail as singles (Image)

2089   Image10c Black, Pair of Double Transfer Types B and D (2-B, 2-D). Positions 31/41R1, vertical pair, top stamp Type B double transfer in "Post Office", "U.S." and top right frameline, bottom stamp Type D double transfer of the bottom and left framelines, huge margins to clear including left sheet margin, bright shade, neat strikes of blue grid cancels, some slight manuscript offset on back, bottom stamp light horizontal crease

FINE-VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THE ONLY RECORDED PAIR OF THE 10-CENT 1847 ISSUE WITH A COMBINATION OF DOUBLE TRANSFER TYPES B AND D.

Vertical pairs of the 1847 issue are much scarcer than horizontal pairs, and the odds of a vertical pair of 10c stamps coming from the only two positions showing the Type B and D Double Transfers (31/41R) are 1 in 180.

Ex Sweet, Stollnitz and Dr. Morris. Scott value of $5,500.00 does not begin to reflect the great rarity of this pair. (Image)
