VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE ONE-HOGSHEAD 1909 ISSUE. ONLY FOUR ARE RECORDED IN THE PRIESTER CENSUS.

We have offered one other of the four, in our Tolman sale. That other copy was extensively repaired with portions of the central design painted in. The example offered here is a very presentable copy of this rarity. (Image)

Showing full denomination and most of central design, perforated cancel, Very Fine and scarce, the full stamp is not known to exist, according the the Priester book these were used to pay tax on beer in vats drawn off for bottling, the center portion was punched out by the revenue collector and the brewer received the center portion as a receipt, the government retained the rest of the stamp and presumably destroyed them, undercatalogued in Scott as only eight are recorded in the Priester census (Image)
