1868-69 Issues: U.S. Post Office in Shanghai: Randolph Keim Correspondence
Lot Sym. Lot Description
1047 c Image10c Yellow (116). Two, tied by quartered cork cancels and "San Francisco Cal. Nov. 18" (1870) circular datestamp on cover to Hartford Conn., magenta "China and Japan Steam Service" oval handstamp at left, pencil docketing on back "4222 m. from S.F., written Sept. 22" and with no indication of origin, carried aboard the Pacific Mail Steamship Co.'s China, which departed Yokohama on Oct. 23, 1870, and arrived in San Francisco Nov. 17, slightly reduced at left where small tear, some minor wear, right 10c stamp flaws at top

VERY FINE. A RARE DOUBLE-RATE COVER FROM JAPAN TO THE UNITED STATES, STRUCK WITH THE "CHINA AND JAPAN STEAM SERVICE" OVAL. FROM THE KEIM CORRESPONDENCE.

This cover does not have a Japanese postmark, but we can deduce its origin and route, based on the docketing and correspondence. This must have missed the sailing of the PMSS Great Republic, which left Hong Kong on Sep. 12 and departed Yokohama on Sep. 23. The sender -- De Benneville Randolph Keim -- was apparently still at sea when the Great Republic left Yokohama. This and four other covers in the Keim correspondence were carried on the China, which departed Yokohama on Oct. 23. The letters (no longer present) were written by De Benneville Randolph Keim to his future wife, Miss Jennie A. Owen. (Image)

1050 c Image10c Yellow (116). Vertical strip of three, cancelled by three strikes of "Hiogo Japan" double-circle handstamp on cover to Miss Jennie A. Owen in Hartford Conn., the strip is also tied by segmented cork cancel and "Yokohama Japan Oct. 23" (1870) circular datestamp, sender's routing "Via Yokohama" at upper left, pencil docketing on back "Hiogo Jeddo Yokohama Sept. 29 to Oct. 4", "San Francisco Cal. Nov. 18" double-circle backstamp, the Yokohama marking strengthened in manuscript (most likely by Jennie Owen, who kept a careful log of the correspondence), few short perfs of little consequence, some slight edgewear

VERY FINE. A RARE MULTIPLE OF THE 10-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE ON A TRIPLE-RATE COVER FROM JAPAN TO THE UNITED STATES, POSTMARKED BY THE U.S. POST OFFICES AT HIOGO AND YOKOHAMA. THE HIOGO MARKING IS EXTREMELY RARE ON COVER, AND THIS YOKOHAMA CORK KILLER HAS NEVER BEFORE BEEN RECORDED. THE USE OF BOTH OFFICE MARKINGS ON ONE COVER IS EXTRAORDINARY.

This cover originated at Hiogo, Japan. It was carried on the Pacific Mail Steamship Co.'s branch line Golden Age, as it travelled from Shanghai to Yokohama, departing Shanghai on Oct. 13, 1870, and arriving in Yokohama on Oct. 21. It was then carried by the PMSS China, which departed Yokohama on Oct. 23 and arrived in San Francisco on Nov. 17. It was delivered to the recipient, Jennie A. Owen, at the same time as four other pieces of mail from De Benneville Randolph Keim, her future husband.

The Frajola, Perlman and Scamp book lists a summary of Yokohama postal markings in an appendix. This cancellation is unlisted, but appears to fit in with others used in the same time period. The "Hiogo Japan" circular handstamp is frequently encountered off cover, but is almost never seen on cover. Power Search contains only two examples used on cover with the 10c 1869 Pictorial, and only two others used on other denominations. (Image)
