Nov. 9" circular datestamp on 1868 cover to Naples, Italy, red Nov. 10 transit datestamp, red crayon credits, red "Hamburg Franco" boxed handstamp also ties 2c, large "P.D." handstamp, transit and receiving backstamps, some toning at left affecting left stamp, otherwise Very Fine use paying the 14c rate by North German Union Direct Closed Mails (Image)

3c Red, F. Grill (94). Rich color, clear grill, tied by bold strike of "A.J." Skull and Crossbones fancy cancel (Rohloff Type R-5) and Waterbury circular datestamp on cover to Windsor Locks Conn., cover with few tears, stamp with light diagonal crease

VERY FINE STRIKE OF THE DESIRABLE ANDREW JOHNSON TOMBSTONE WITH SKULL FANCY CANCEL. VERY RARE USED ON A COVER.

Andrew Johnson assumed the presidency after the assassination of Lincoln in 1865. He was unable to secure the nomination for the 1868 election, partly because he had alienated many politicians and the public. This sentiment is reflected in the fancy cancel.
