April 27, 1864 origin date on outbound blockade-run cover to Mrs. John Lorenzo Locke in Rome, in care of Baring Brothers in London and Parkenham & Hooker in Rome, manuscript "1/" shilling prepaid packet postage, delivered to Baring Brothers, who re-mailed it at nearby Lombard Street post office, red "Lombard Street Paid JU 30 64" circular datestamp and red "PD" in oval, Marseille, Paris and Rome backstamps, Jul. 6 receipt docketing, part of top flap missing, Very Fine, from the famed Locke correspondence, while the cover lacks clear transit markings prior to arrival in London, Steven Walske's notes on the back indicate the cover was carried aboard the blockade-runner Helen II, departing Wilmington May 12, 1864 and arriving Bermuda May 16, then carried on the Merlin, leaving Bermuda June 3 and arriving St. Thomas June 9, then aboard a Royal Mail steamer leaving June 15 and arriving Southampton June 29, most covers from this correspondence went through Nassau, including a cover that was mailed more than three weeks after this one yet arrived in Rome on July 4th, two days before this cover (Image)

Small outbound blockade-run cover to "Mr. John Grimball, care of Fraser, Trenholm & Co." in Liverpool, possibly addressed to "Mr." to disguise the fact that Grimball was a Confederate Naval officer, no postal markings but incl. photocopy of the original letter datelined "Spartanburg S.C. June 28, 1864", Very Fine, a desirable outbound blockade run cover with military connection, possibly carried from Charleston on the blockade-runner Lynx which departed July 1 for Bermuda, the Lynx was a Fraser Trenholm ship and the Firm was a major principal in the blockade-running business, Lieutenant John Grimball's career included service on the C.S.S. Arkansas, an ironclad operating near Vicksburg and reputed to be the most feared ship of the C.S. Navy, he was assigned to service abroad on Jan. 6, 1864, and was appointed to the famed C.S.S. Shenandoah on Oct. 8, 1864, the Shenandoah's exploits continued months after the end of the war, as she captured whalers for prize, Lt.
