814 c ImageAgency Post Office Dept., Trans-Miss., Official Business, Agent. Similar to Dietz Ty. I (except second line in caps), signed by Jas. H. Starr, on 3c Red Star Die entire (U26) to the postmaster of Burkville Tex., light strike of "Marshall Tex." double-circle datestamp (1864, date unclear), cover re-addressed inside, though if a turned usage it did not enter the mails a second time, trivial cosmetic improvement along edges and expertly cleaned, Very Fine and extremely rare, Starr was appointed the Agent for the Trans-Mississippi Department in Feb. 1864 and has been the subject of extensive new archival research by Vince King, ex Green, with 2000 C.S.A. certificate (Image)

Dep't" five-page circular to Texas Governor Pendleton Murrah, endorsed "PWG" above the straightline by Peter W. Gray, agent of the Trans-Mississippi Department, E.H. Cushing Printers, Houston imprint on last page, circular covers the act establishing the Department, regulations relating to it and instructions to depositaries and tax collectors, stain at bottom left and some general minor wear, Very Fine, an outstanding Confederate item and extremely rare both as a Trans-Mississippi Dept. original document and as a Confederate circular (Image)

816 c ImagePerote Ala. Feb. 11, 1863. Perfect strike of circular datestamp with year date in error (should be 1864), matching bold "Paid" straightline and ms. "40" rate on cover to Monroe La., endorsed "Express mail via Brandon Miss.", address is faded but still legible, most of top flap missing and repaired at top barely into top right of postmark

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE WESTBOUND 40-CENT TRANS-MISSISSIPPI POST OFFICE EXPRESS COVER WITH THE HANDSTAMPED "PAID". THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED WESTBOUND EXAMPLE WITH THIS MARKING.

The Krieger census lists this cover (E17) but at the time the census was published a full picture of it was not available. The census lists only two handstamped "Paid" Trans-Mississippi Express covers -- one Eastbound and this one Westbound.

817 c Image20c Green (13). Two singles, margins virtually all around, tiny erosion spot at top of left stamp and light crease right stamp, tied by "Richmond Va. Apr. 3" (1864) circular datestamp on cover to Rocky Mount, La., manuscript "Per Express Via Brandon, Miss.", some cover aging and barely reduced at right

FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE 40-CENT WEST-BOUND GOVERNMENT TRANS-MISSISSIPPI EXRPRESS RATE PAID WITH THE 20-CENT GENERAL ISSUE AND DIRECTED "PER EXPRESS VIA BRANDON MISS."

This cover was sent by Private Robert R. Hanks of the the 9th Louisiana Infantry, to his wife. Hanks was captured as a POW at the Rappahannock River on Nov. 11, 1863 and was exchanged in March 1864, just before this cover was sent.
