164   Image$5.00 Green & Black on Violet Paper, Proprietary (RB10a). Wonderfully choice centering with selvage at top, rich colors, detailed impression, neat "J H B Feb. 18/79" manuscript cancel

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF THE RARE $5.00 PROPRIETARY ON VIOLET PAPER. THIS MAY WELL BE THE FINEST USED EXAMPLE IN EXISTENCE. A REMARKABLE STAMP.

According to Introduction to U.S. Revenue Stamps by Richard Friedberg, beginning with the 1871 revenue issues, the government provided for two classes of revenue stamps, one for documentary issues and one for proprietary articles, such as medicines, matches, perfumes, playing cards, canned foods etc. Most examples of the $5.00 have faults, due to the stamp's large size and the nature of its use. The example offered here, in sound condition and with selvage, is probably the finest in existence.

Ex Anderson and Mayer. With 1985 and 2003 P.F. certificates. (Image)
