The ship carrying the mail was sunk after a collision with a Norwegian ship in the St. Lawrence River on 29 May, 1914. The sinking resulted in the loss of over 1,000 lives and was Canada's worst maritime disaster. The cover has blue s/l 'RECOVERED BY DIVERS FROM THE WRECK OF SS EMPRESS OF IRELAND'.
