124 16a imageFalkland Islands, 1891, Queen Victoria, 6d orange yellow (Scott 16a), tied by segmented cork cancel on a registered cover from Port Stanley, via London, to Cincinnati, O., May 15-Jul 2, 1894; envelope with the corner card of H. Schlottfeldt, agent for the "Kosmos" German Shipping Company in Port Stanley. Includes the original enclosure, a letter from Schlottfeldt to prominent Cincinnati collector, Frederic G. Huntington, quoting prices for then-current postage stamps because the Postmaster, to whom Huntington had written, "cannot be troubled by such orders". The cover, which would ordinarily be of only minor significance, was fortuitously mailed with a single franking of the rare 6d orange yellow, the more common 6d yellow not being issued until 1896. Gibbons suggests a premium of 15 times the used price (£225) for legitimate postal usages of stamps from this issue, Fine to Very Fine.
