A striking example of cross-border cooperation; sent by a Fritz Stäber in Kabul, Afghanistan (per his bilingual return address on backflap) to family in Dresden; the cover was brought across the border to Peshawar, where it was franked with the appropriate 10a Indian postage (comprising an 8a First Issue Airmail plus a ½a, 1a and pair of 3a King George V definitives) and cancelled; straightline "15.Dez. 1932" handstamp (German receiver?) on front; without backstamps; cover ever so slightly reduced at left, still a Very Fine cover and pretty, one of the earliest Airmail covers from Afghanistan.

Both covers with special "Opening of the Regular Air Mail Service" cachet, the first sent London to Calcutta franked with pair of 4d King George V definitives and cancelled "London E.C./30 JU/33" double-ring c.d.s.; additional same-day wavy-line machine c.d.s. inverted at bottom with reverse bearing boxed pictorial "Karachi-Calcutta/8 JUL 33/First/Airmail" cachet and Calcutta 9 JUL slogan delivery cancel; second, addressed to Asansol (and redirected to England) bears 3a3p in Indian King George V definitives cancelled Calcutta G.P.O./10 JLY 33 while reverse shows similar flight cachet (though reading Calcutta-Karachi/11 JLY. 33" and Asansol 12 JLY Delivery and 22 Aug (redirect?) c.d.s.'s; London-to-Calcutta cover with central vertical file fold and small hinge remnant, still a Very Fine pair.

One bearing King George V "Service" overprinted stamps sent from the 6th (Lucknow) Infantry Brigade to the War Department in Whitehall (cancelled Lucknow 23 JUN 37); one with 14a "Service"-inscribed King George VI definitives to Cleveland with manuscript "O.H.M.S." and "By Air Mail" along with "Despatcher,/Delhi Polytechnic" handstamp on front (sent 1946); the last a 1947 (? c.d.s.'s indistinct) oversized O.H.M.S. cover franked by 1R13½a King George VI definitives (1R overprinted, remainders inscribed, "Service"), sent Registered to Philadelphia, with two "Registered" handstamps and Registry label, along with two-line violet "Criminal Investigation Department/Special Branch" handstamp at lower left; file folds to Registered cover, the others opened a little roughly, still Fine to Very Fine+, an interesting lot.

46   imageIndia, 1937 (Mar. 15), Letter (with Cover) datelined Belur to St. Louis, Mentioning Dinner with the Lindberghs in India. Cover is franked with an irregular block of three ½a plus a pair of 4a King George V definitives tied by two strikes of "Liluah/15 MAR 37" cancels, with an interesting tombstone "Liluah/Due/ as." marking below (no value indicated)—but the star of this lot is the enclosed four-page letter written by one Tanturo Sojo (Tojo?) to "Baroness G. Wedellsborg" at the Gatesworth Hotel in St. Louis; the author mentions meeting the Lindberghs at the house of freedom fighter and poet Sarojini Naidu, providing a brief glimpse into the publicity-shy Lindbergh's sense of humor; also mentioned are Tibet explorer Sir. Francis Younghusband and artist Edith Emerson; a fascinating read; approximate 9mm separation along horizontal fold of letter at spine, otherwise Very Fine, a unique piece of history.

While boasting a bilingual "By Air Mail" etiquette, the Due marking suggests the Airmail rate was underpaid. But given that there is no amount indicated as due, plus the red marking that partially cancels the etiquette, the letter may well have travelled to Missouri via Surface Mail. Lindbergh was in India, according to a Feb. 22, 1927, New York Times article, "to discuss possibilities of linking India in a world-wide air mail chain formed by alliance of Pan American Airways with the British Imperial Airways." . Martin and his first seaplane flight over any part of the Pacific; franked by a vertical pair of Scott US #C19 (bottom stamp fault lower right) tied by Newport Beach, Calif May 10 wavy-line machine cancel; red manuscript notation "Via Air Mail & Catalina" on front; Balboa Island, Calif. A lovely tri-paneled folder in amazingly pristine condition, outlining the new services for, as it is titled, "Mails for East and South Africa, India, Malaya, etc."; all First Class mail for points African or Asian could now be posted in ordinary letter boxes (rather than the blue Air Mail boxes) without etiquettes or other "Airmail" indications; folder lists destinations covered by the new scheme, provides new postage rates for First and Second Class mail, shows time saved by posting by Air rather than Surface, service frequency and posting requirements; tape strip on left panel, otherwise Very Fine, the Scheme's Second Stage was inaugurated Feb. 23, 1938; an interesting Airmail collateral.

A lovely cover in blue with silhouette of pigeon, franked by 1a3p King George V Service overprinted issue and tied by red "Kalyan/6 Apr./1941/First Pigeon Missive" wavy-line machine cancel; with pre-printed "The Message contained in this envelope was carried by a pigeon from Kalyan to Bombay", a distance of 30 miles; boxed Bombay G.P.O. same-day delivery stamp at left; insert, included with the lot, is an accordion booklet with information and photos of homing pigeons, information on the flight, and some wonderful old-time, old-world advertisements, Very Fine, definitely not one you see every day.

The enclosed booklet explains: "This is the First Flight performed by about 250 Homing Pigeons in Bombay Presidency. They were flown from Kalyan to Bombay, a distance of about 30 miles. Each bird carried eight slips of messages from H. E. Sir Roger Lumley, G.C.I.E., T.D., Governor of Bombay, to Vice-Admiral Herbert Fitz-Herbert, C.B., C.M.G., Flag Officer Commanding The Royal Indian Navy.

"This Flight is organized and carried out by the Royal Indian Navy and the amount realized from the sales of these 2,000 'Flown Messages' enclosed in an envelope will be donated to 'The Royal Indian Navy War Purposes Fund.' Bearing 5R, 2R, 1R and 6a King George VI issues, plus over forty 15½a meters, roughly matching the 47R2a rate; cover bears scarce "Victory" handstamp along with transits of Singapore (10 DEC 41), San Francisco (Feb 4, 1942) and Vancouver (Feb 5) and Montréal 7 Feb receiver; Customs clearance handstamp on front, with Censor's tape, triangular handstamp and broken wax seals; front also bears the rare marking "TO BE FORWARDED BY AIRMAIL TO SINGAPORE"; faults, still Fine to Very Fine, quite a conversation piece, rarely encountered.

This cover was sent from India to North America via the Second East-Bound Route (opened October 14, 1940): Calcutta to Singapore by Airmail, then to Hong Kong by Surface Mail, then Clipper Mail to San Francisco via Guam and Hawaii.
