1851 Issue
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
1092 o 5 image1851, 1¢ blue, type I (Scott 5), light unobtrusive face-free postmark allows full display of the Type I attributes, bright pastel color indicative of the Type I upon lily-white paper, nearly four full margins, lovely, Fine to Very Fine, a very affordable example of this most elusive issue that is missing from most collections.
Scott $67,500.
Estimate $30,000 - 40,000

As the sheet was being prepared, it was clear that an entire pane of the full design wouldn't fit on the plate, so the existing images were erased and the sheet was restarted with reduced designs. This is the only stamp of this issue from position 7 on the right side of the early state of plate 1 to retain the full type characteristics and also have the double impression of the erased first image. This lovely stamp has larger margins than most of this scarce issue showing nearly full type characteristics along with the lovely bright powdery blue color and with the added rarity of this stamp being sound; this stamp really has it all…. margins, color, condition… what more could you want in this issue??!

Scott $11,300.
Estimate $4,000 - 6,000

This stamp was on the first sheet of the 1¢ 1851 issue and it quickly became apparent that full panes of 100 would not fit on the allotted space of the sheet, so all the engravings were pounded out (leaving some double impressions) and started again. The first stamp applied was no. 5 (type I), but the same size and spacing problems emerged. To fix the spacing, part of the bottom balls were removed, creating type Ia (Scott no. 5A), starting with positions 6R1E and 8R1E and subsequently removing more of the design of the later issues (creating the remaining less desirable type Ia's) until finally all of the balls and scrolls were completely removed to create type II which is the type commonly used.
