1425 o 233a image1893, Columbian, 4¢ blue, color error (Scott 233a), duplex cancel, bright example of this difficult shade; picked out inclusion at left and small horizontal crease at right, otherwise Fine to Very Fine, Scott value is with small faults, with 1993 P.F. certificate.
Scott $16,500.
Estimate $7,500 - 10,000

Brookman posed the question 'is this an error or a color variety?', and the truth is no one knows. It doesn't quite match the 1¢ or 4¢ shades, although it is reported that spectrograph analysis shows many similar elements between this stamp and the 1¢ color. Either way, this shade is very distinct and has become one of the keys of a respectable U.S. collection. It is estimated that only two panes exist, although there is some variation of color between the stamps known and some argue there are as many as four shades.
