1002   imagePhilippines, 1954 (Jan. 14), Philippine Airlines Manila-London cover salvaged at Rome, singed to a half-circle on left, long airmail cover posted from Tokyo to London, bearing 3 Nierinck-listed cachets on front: black "Corrispondenza recuperata in seguito/incidente aereo del 14 GEN 1954" applied in Italy (Type a), black 2-line "DAMAGED IN/PAL-AIRCRAFT CRASH" applied in London (Type f) and 2-line "DAMAGED IN P.A.L. AIRCRAFT CRASH" on mail for Britain, but in blue rather than the Nierinck-listed black (Type i var); reverse free of markings, Very Fine.

After leaving Beirut, the "Cloud Master", a DC 6, arrived near Rome where it had to land, as its 2 right-side engines were burning, making it impossible to reach Ciampino airport. Attempting a forced landing, it exploded 20 meters above the ground. 18 died; part of the mail was recovered.

The Springbok, a DH80 Puss Moth, hit a storm and crashed on a mountainside 30 km from Capetown. Some of the mail was recovered and forwarded under Service cover with a typewritten letter (as here); about 600 pieces of mail were salvaged.

Due to wartime conditions, the BOAC flight avoided the more direct route over the Skagerrak (the strait of water to the west of Sweden between Norway and Denmark's Jutland Peninsula), flying instead over central Sweden, where it crashed on Kinnekulle Mountain in Västergötland. Recovered mail was forwarded, with a number of special marks.

1011   image1930 (Sept. 15-Oct. 22), Pre-FAM 6 survey & pre-flight covers, four in all, the earliest being a colorful Uruguay cover from the Sept. 15 Rio - Montevidéo - Rio - U.S. flight, with eight-stamp franking and boxed cachet in blue showing Uruguayan and U.S. Great Seals under which reads "Primer Vuelo/Uruguay-Estados Unidos/Via Panair/F.A.M. No 10", with violet boxed "via NYRBA/Correspondencia Aerea" (added later); additionally, two Haitian covers from Port-au-Prince dated Oct. 20, 1930, one to Cayenne, French Guiana, the other to Maranhao, Brazil, both sporting large double-ring "Premier Vol" blue cachets, the cover to Brazil noted in typescript ""Via first flight F.A.M. 10" and signed "Roberts" and by the Haitian Postmaster General; the final cover is dated Oct. 22, 1930, sent Suriname to Brazil (Muller #29), bearing incomplete "Luchtpost/Suriname/Par Avion" barred bridge handstamp in violet; appropriate backstamps each, Very Fine, a lovely group of pre-Pan Am covers, when the skies really were open.
