926 2705 imageCanada, 1927 (Sep 1), Attempted Windsor, Ont. - Windsor, England (AAMC 2705), cover addressed to Ireland with appropriate flight cachet and boxed "Trans-Atlantic Air Mail", no other markings; includes original letter noting the occasion and telling the addressee that "this letter is being handed to Mr. Schiller" (Duke Schiller, one of the two pilots); also includes a 3½: x 5" photo of a Stinson Model V monoplane similar to the Royal Windsor used for the flight, Fine to Very Fine.

The plane, a Laté 28, was forced to fly low owing to poor visibility. The pilot, Négrin, skimmed the waves and the plane sank, killing the crew and Mr. Pranville, Manager of "Aeropostale in South America". All 1482 letters were recovered.

During the "Scipio"'s forced landing at Mirabello Bay, a sudden cross-wind swung the plane around, causing it to crash and sink within minutes. The 38 postal bags were recovered and dried. This cover is special in that it still retains one of its (originally two) stamps; Nierinck notes that the stamps are missing on nearly all "Scipio" covers.

The DC 6 sent a final radio message 20 minutes before it was due to land; the wreckage was found 8 days later on Mt. Terminillo, 70 km northeast of Rome. All 29 aboard were killed. The mail, as well as a special shipment of diamonds, was recovered.

Over Morocco, one of the DC 7's engines failed, causing the pilot to attempt landing at Casablanca. The plane came down, missed the landing strip and crashed against a military building, catching fire and killing 65. Four people survived, and part of the mail was recovered.
