Thoolen, c/o Mr. Donald E. Dickson, Wooster, Ohio; typical charring around the edges, but with the address, stamp, cancel and flight cachet fully readable, Very Fine. Only about 165 pieces of partially burned mail were salvaged, 147 of them with U.S. addresses. This is cover no. 13 of the 28 recovered covers originating in the Netherlands.

5160 63b imageGermany, 1937 (May 3-7), Hindenburg 1st North America Flight, recovered onboard mail (Michel 63b), cover addressed to New York City and bearing a 50pf Hindenburg and the outline of 5 additional stamps which have fallen off, canceled by three strikes of the onboard cancel dated 5 May, the day before the crash; manuscript "3.25", which would have been under two of the lost stamps, indicates that the missing stamps would have been four 50pf stamps and a 75pf, equaling 3.25m; charred around the edges as always, Very Fine. Only 58 of the recovered covers were addressed to Germany., with 1995 G.P.S. certificate.

About 175 pieces of uncanceled mail intended for the return trip had been placed in a metal container and, consequently, was able to survive the fire. When the container was recovered, mail to U.S. addresses was forwarded to the Foreign Section in the New York Post Office, which sent the items to the respective addressees’ Postmaster with a request to secure a registered receipt. Those with foreign addresses were canceled and returned by ship to Europe. But since this cover was franked with German stamps, it did not fall under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Post Office and a U.S. cancel could not be applied. 5162   imageNetherlands, 1937 (May 3-7), Hindenburg 1st North America Flight, recovered mail collateral, three items of collateral relating to the preceding "Thoolen" cover: 1.) The original Post Office Penalty envelope that carried the 17 covers addressed to G. Thoolen c/o Donald E. Dickason from the New York Postmaster to the Postmaster of Wooster, Ohio. 2.) A photostatic copy of the letter of transmittal that accompanied those 17 covers. 3.) An original Memorandum fro Dickason to a collector client, one George W. Bartlett, to whom Dickason had just sold one of the Thoolen covers; in part, "…you have my personal guarantee that he [the Wooster Postmaster] delivered the lot of Hindenburg covers to me personally and that the one sent to you is from that lot. The enclosure envelope [number 2.) above] containing the lot is in my hands and I'll send it along, as you might like to have it to keep with your cover.".

Carl H. Miller, who ministered to the victims of the crash; his heroic deeds were reported in the Literary Digest of May 29, 1937.
