This stamp is one of the rarest regularly issued British Commonwealth stamps. It was discovered, quite by chance, in January of 1968, by one Derek Clayton, a collector living in Singapore. Clayton made an appointment to examine the Post Office's stock of Malayan postage due stamps on hand just prior to Singapore's issuance of its own postage due stamps on February 1. When he noticed the different watermark on the 50¢, he looked further and was able to locate and purchase twenty-five of them in total. And to this day, those twenty-five stamps are the main source of mint stamps in public hands. He was later able to establish that there were only another seven mint examples in private hands. It now appears that this stamp was supplied only to Singapore and, as further confirmation, the examples in the Crown Agents' archive at the British Library are marked "'SINGAPORE".
