Mauritius
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
621 16a imageMauritius, 1859, Dardenne issue, 1d deep red (Scott 16a), horizontal pair with nice margins around to gently touching tied to locally used small size envelope by two ring numeral "12" of Grand River and mute barred oval postmarks, octagonal framed Grand River / 1 MR 60 marking; manuscript rate mark "1d" alongside, backstamped arrival marking of crowned split circle Mauritius / FE 3 60 (in error), it is likely that the postal clerk at Port Louis neglected to adjust his cancelling device to reflect the end of February and the beginning of March; rough excising of addressee, otherwise Very Fine, Consider, for instance, that the Monumental Kanai collection of Classic Mauritius did not include any example of a pair of the 1d Dardenne stamps paying 2d letter rate, incredibly rare, ex- JW Scott Sale November 9, 1906, signed Sismondo, with 2016 Sismondo certificate.
SG 41; £15,000 priced from ($23,250).
Estimate $7,500 - 10,000

The payment of 2d represents the postage for a single weight letter sent internally in the island, this rate went into effect on March 1st of 1850 and remained in effect until the change in currency of January 3rd 1878, the additional penny due assessed represents the fee of 1d paid to the ship's captain who carried the mail from Grand River to Port Louis.
