30   imageUsed to China (Peking) in 1900. 1892, Queen Victoria Jubilee, 4½d green & carmine, single, tied by "Torrington Place W.C. JA 12 00" postmark on extremely scarce "red band" envelope sent as registered mail from London to Peking China; oval registered London handstamp at lower right, San Francisco registry label at upper right (town name in sans-serif letters, only 176 examples recorded), Peking receiving mark at lower left; New Yor, San Francisco and Shanghai backstamps, a Very Fine usage.
Scott 117. SG 206.
Estimate $500 - 750

Red band covers were normally used internally in China for important mail, but not from abroad. This cover traveled by Cunard packet out of Southampton to New York then via San Francisco and Shanghai. This route took 39 days to reach Shanghai. The usual route via Suez and Hong Kong took about 28 days. The choice of this route may have been occasioned by the "Boxer Rebellion" then raging in South China, possibly putting mail from Hong Kong to Shanghai in jeopardy
