While in Greenland on a film-making expedition, acclaimed artist, Rockwell Kent, produced a stamp to be used on letters flown from the expedition's base camp to a working camp. Kent himself carved the woodblock from which a small number of stamps (75 or so) were rather crudely printed. Upon his return to the U.S., Kent authorized the New York City firm of Pynson Printers to make a second printing of 200-300 examples using much finer printing methods, after which he defaced the woodblock and donated it to a museum.
