3481   imageFrance, 1668, matched pair of folded letters to a Nobleman in the Court of Louis XIV, both from a Monsieur Marin, one addressed to Angoulême, the other to Limoges (the Court spent summers in Angoulême, winters in Limoges; neither cover with postal markings, but the Limoges cover still bears a good part of the silk cord that was held to the cover, front and back, with a wax seal. A Very Fine pair of covers to a Courtier of the "Sun King".

3482   imageFrance, 1807, "No. 54/(G)RANDE ARMÉE", red straightline on 2-page folded letter with an manuscript "8" rate and a Very Fine strike "Mars/ 23/ 1807" double-lined double circle datestamp on reverse, datelined "Zernin, a une lieue-et-demi de Colberg" (Zernin, a league and a half [about 5 miles] from Colberg); the letter starts off triumphantly but then becomes somber, the writer speaking of his unit's "baptism of fire", of taking prisoners, etc.; the letter is unsigned (could the writer have been killed before finishing it?) but is addressed in the writer's hand to a Monsieur de Montbreton in Paris; Very Fine and quite interesting. Includes a typed transcription of the first page and a handwritten transcription of the second—both in French.

D\des Contre-Seing" the same day on reverse; inside marked with the official red "Commune de Paris/ Secrétariat" handstamp and docketed 12 May; some internal splitting, Very Fine. Includes French transcription and English translation.
