2228 10A/11A image1851-52, 3¢ types I & II, Chase Chronological Color Study (Scott 10A/11A), 32 single franked covers, each with the shade identified chronologically by Chase; comprises four shades each from 1851 (all 10A), 1853 & 1856 and five each from 1852, 1854, 1855 & 1857; mounted on nine 11" x 17½" pages with captions taken from Chase's own notes in a Charles J. Phillips approval book (inexplicably, one 1853 cover that was originally mounted in the book is missing); all stamps are plated by Chase and, other than one #10, which has a pre-use crease, the stamps are all F-VF (several #11s with four margins) and the covers all clean Very Fine. A fabulous lot for the specialist.

There is no experimental orange brown, plum or pinkish, but Chase does note "Bright orange-red, a rare 1855 color" and a "Rare bright 1856 color".
