Andrew Johnson was elected as vice president in 1864 and was elevated to the president upon Lincoln's assassination. As a Democrat he came into conflict with the Republican dominated Congress and became the first president to be impeached, he was acquitted in the Senate by one vote.

2005   imageRoosevelt, Franklin D., signature as president. Usual bold signature on a philatelically franked cover postmarked July of 1934 aboard the U.S.S. Houston in San Juan Puerto Rico. Roosevelt is known to have signed several pieces of mail while on this cruise to Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Canal Zone and Hawaii, terminating at Portland Oregon on July 24. The reverse of the envelope bears a printed "Colgan" cachet prepared especially for the cruise.

2009   image[California] San Francisco "40" Great Mining Letter, excellent strike of red 6/1 San Francisco "40", on folded letters to Dorchester MA, letter reads in part "…Jason has arrived here, and in good health, he made the passge in one hundred and thirty days, a very quick passage…i am to work putting up a large Hotell as good a one as there is in California…i work by the day at 1 one ounce per day…i think we shall go up to the mines wich is not far…The Massquetoes are very thick. some people are bite very bad…it is most too early to go to the mines, the river is high yet. There will be a great del of gold taking out this summer for there is a good many people to take it out. There is Gold enough if you could only find it, there is some do well and others not…" Wonderful glimpse into early San Francisco, Very Fine cover & content.

2012   image[Pennsylvania] 1786 folded letter Philadelphia to Boston, handstamped neat "11/IA" Franklin mark, rate "4 (pence) and endorsed "Forwarded by Post", Very Fine; although the Jan 11 postmark, the letter is datelined Jan 12.

The letter is an ALS from Sam(uel) Hodgdon to Mr. Jonathan Williams, Jr., notifying Williams of his acceptance into the Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture, America's oldest agricultural society. Five years after this letter was written Hodgdon would be appointed America's first Quartermaster General by President George Washington.
