1252   imageFrench Polynesia, 1947, Kon-Tiki Expedition commemorative cover, with four French Polynesia postage dues, each tied by "PAPEETE/ 28-6/ 47/ ILE TAHITI" circular datestamp, which is repeated on reverse, adjacent cachet depicts the Kon-Tiki, the raft and its route from Peru to Tahiti. There is also a red Lima circular datestamp and postage due handstamp on front, plus a commemorative backstamp; light vertical fold affecting 3fr stamp, Fine to Very Fine.

As known on April 28, 1947, a raft left Peru to the French Polynesian islands. Six hardy adventurers made up the crew. The head of the expedition was Thor Heyerdahl, who believed that people from South America could have settled Polynesia in Pre-Columbian times. The cover was prepared after the Kon-Tiki reached Tahiti on August 7. According to an accompanying article published in 1973, only six were prepared.
