1188   Indian Expeditionary Force "D" (Mesopotamia), Lieutenant-Colonel Bowker Correspondence, 1915-1916. The largest Indian Army force to serve abroad was the Indian Expeditionary Force D, under the command of Lieutenant-General Sir John Nixon. The first unit sent in November 1914, was the 6th (Poona) Division and they were tasked with guarding British oil installations in and around Basra. After several early successes, the campaign was delivered a setback at the Battle of Ctesiphon in November 1915. Following this engagement, the Poona Division withdrew back to Kut, where Major General Sir CharlesTownshend made the decision to hold the city and the siege of Kut began. This lot contains a fair number of covers with their contents, and several telegrams to Mrs. Bowker (wife of Lieutenant-Colonel Bowker, who died in the battle of Hanna, which had as an objective to help the Anglo-Indian forces besieged in Kunt), including one dated on July 29, 1915, and reading "Glad to say Colonel Bowker arrived Basra this morning and walked off boat wounded slightly in chest and arm, no operation necessary, doing splendidly"; other dated on February 8, 1916, and reading "The King and Queen deeply regret the loss you and the army have sustained by the death of your husband in the service of his country, their majesties truly sympathise with you in your sorrow", plus several letters of condolence expressing sympathy and sadness on the death of Lieutenant-Colonel Bowker. We also noted a couple of letters written by Mr. Bowker, and addressed to his wife. Truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Fine to Very Fine.
