1819   imageCanada, 1840 (Dec. 7), letter from Amherstburg, Upper Canada to Dover, England, twice re-directed, first to Sandwich and then Westminster, a pre-paid stampless folded lettersheet datelined Fort Malden and a lengthy letter with Indian laden content written by a member of the 43rd Light Infantry, Fitzroy Gordon L-----, carried aboard the Cunard Line Caledonia which arrived in London on the 18th of January and was passed to Dover the same day where it was backstamped. On delivery, the letter was redirected to Sandwich, arriving there on the 19th and clearly postmarked and backstamped, due a penny and was then forwarded again, now with postage paid (Penny Black, Plate 8), to Poet's Corner, Westminister; minor paper breaks along folds in no way affecting the integrity of the letter, Very Fine and rare, 1995 BPA certificate.

1827   imageTristan da Cunha, ca 1920's, outbound cover to Devon, England bearing cut-out of Type II cachet, a light strike of the cachet cut to shape and affixed to cover to Devon in lieu of franking. Believed to be a unique usage; the islander who prepared this cover may have reused the strike from a spoiled envelope in the mistaken belief that this cachet had franking value. The addressee, Mrs. C.H. Dent aided the islanders by means of gift parcels.
