229   imageGermany, 1917, Submarime Mail cover, cover franked with 20pf Germania stamp, and tied by Bremen January bridge datestamp, adjacent Bremen D.O.R. 20.1.17 submarine pictorial datestamp & "Zuruck/ Wegen Einstellung des Tauchboot/ Briefverkens zuruck an Absender" three-line handstamp, latter indicating that the cover was returned to the sender, owing to ending of the submarine letter traffic, Fine to Very Fine, accompanied by article published in The Philatelist, March 1969.
Estimate $300 - 400

The idea of a submarine merchant service in an effort to beat the blockade operated by the Royal Navy was suggested in Sep. 1915, and submarine "Deutschland" made two trips to the U.S. in 1916. A second submarine, the Bremen, sailed in September1916 for Norfolk, Viriginia, but never arrived and its fate is a mistery. Owing to the increased likelihood of the United States entering the war, the German Post Office stopped accepting further submarine mail on Feb. 8, 1917, and on Feb. 13 it issued regulations for the return of mail already accepted.
