 New Zealand, 1940 WWII Recruiting Bombhlet Air Drop by the R.N.Z.A.F.
During Nov and Dec 1940 the RNZAF dropped thousands of recruiting "bombhlets" over Christchurch, Dunedin and Timaru. Fewer than 20 are known today.

 New Zealand, 1940 Ship Wreck Airmail Cover. New Zealand censored cover
flown by Pan Am to San Francisco and then onward to London. Cover addressed to Hungary then placed on the Dutch vessel S.S. "Athena" which ran aground and sunk. Letter salvaged but "No Service, Return to Sender" directional marking
applied since there was no longer service to Hungary. Airmail canceled by jusqu'a markings and returned to sender by surface means. A great cover!

 New Zealand, 1940-42 Outstanding Ancillary Markings. Two covers with
attractive markings. First cover postmarked Masterton June 29, 1942 and marked for airmail service to Auckland. Marking "Too Late For Air-Mail" most likely in Wellington. Second cover is postmarked Wellington June 19, 1940 and addressed to
Queenstown. Printed 3-line marking "Carried on Emergency Flights/Wellington-Christchurch/20th & 21st June, 1940." Aircraft "Kaku" and signed by pilots. Very interesting items.

covers, one 5d per ½ oz rate to Australia, another 10d double rate for 1 oz. letter to New Guinea (NZ circular censor "50" applied in Auckland), another 3d per ½ oz domestic rate, lastly 6d domestic double rate with 4d
franking and 4d due paid (double the deficiency). Attractive grouping.

interesting covers. First a First Flight cover for through airmail service NZ-Australia-England postmarked Rotorua Apr 20, 1940, and then airmail canceled in London and forwarded by surface to addressee in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Second cover is a
censored envelope from Auckland to Zurich Feb 11, 1941, with airmail canceled in London.

Instructional Marking. Wonderful cover mailed in Timaru Jan 12, 1942, addressed to "Mandated Territory of New Guinea." In addition to "Postal Service Suspended" marking we find a New Zealand Circular Censor handstamp "5"
applied in Christchurch, a 3-line purple cachet "This article was intercepted overseas and returned to New Zealand" applied by the Dead Letter Office in Wellington, and a circular backstamp "Dead Letter Office, 18 MY .42 1, Wellington
N.Z.".

 New Zealand, 1943 (July 10) "Third Liberty Loan" Bombhlet Air
Drop Over Christchurch City. On July 10, 1943, the NZ Government dropped 2,500 of these "bombhlets" over Christchurch in an effort to raise money for the war effort. Fewer than 12 survive today.

 New Zealand, 1944 (Mar. 9) Hawkes Bay Flood Emergency Flight (NZAMC
247j). Cover flown from Napier to Wairoa by Flying Officer G.C. Lewis during a flood emergency. Written inscription on cover. While considerable mail was carried on the various flights over 4 days very little survived and is identifiable.
This March 9, 1944 mail piece was dropped over Wairoa.

 New Zealand, 1945 (Jan. 25, 28) North Island Rail Strike Emergency Air
Flights (NZAMC 254c, 254t). As a result of a rail strike on the North Island, the government ordered the RNZAF to fly passengers and mail Jan 24-28, 1945. Two (2) covers, one flown New Plymouth to Auckland on 25th; the other
Wellington to Gisborne on the 28th (backstamp Gisborne 28JA45 10AM). Second has private single-line cachet.
