1303   imageNew Zealand, 1936-38 Boxed Instructional Marking "Via Sydney-Singapore-England". Two examples of a very scarce routing handstamp, one on a 1936 airmail cover from Napier to Scotland and the other on a 1938 cover to Herts., England. Only 19 examples of this handstamp have been recorded.

From April 1936 to July 1948 whenever there was an interruption due to bad weather, high winds, fog, etc., the airmail was supposed to be appropriately marked. Attractive selection of seven (7) covers having this marking, in various colors. Noted are First Flights, commercial mail, late fee, etc.

1308 NZAMC No. 134 imageNew Zealand, 1936 (July 24) Timaru-Palmerston North Emergency Flight (NZAMC 134). The ZK-AEG "Karoro" was flown on an unscheduled flight back to Palmerston North the day after an emergency landing in Timaru. A very few covers were flown on this flight. NZAMC says "At least two covers are known to have been postmarked Timaru 24 JLY 36 and flown to Palmerton North where they were backstamped PALMERSTON North 24 JLY 4-PM". This is one of those covers.

1313 NZAMC No. 156 imageNew Zealand, 1937 (Mar. 2) Special Flight to H.M.S. Achilles (NZAMC 156). On March 2, 1937, the H.M.S. Achilles was visiting Queen Charlotte Sound in the South Island. Since much mail had accumulated in Wellington for the ship's company, the ship's aircraft was dispatched to collect the mail. This cover was flown back to the ship. It is postmarked Wellington Mar 2, 1937, signed by the pilot, and has the ship's oval datestamp as a receiving stamp. Only 3 covers known today.

1314 NZAMC No. 168 imageNew Zealand, 1937 (Sep. 2) Wellington-Christchurch Unscheduled Flight (NZAMC 168). On Sep 1 the Union Airways regular flight from Palmerston North was forced by bad weather to land at Rongotai. The next morning the plane flew unscheduled to Christchurch. Mail on the special flight was postmarked in Wellington at 8:30 AM and backstamped in Christchurch at 12-M. This cover was then returned to Wellington by surface means. Fewer than 10 covers from this flight known to exist today. Very underpriced in NZAMC.

1315   imageNew Zealand, 1937 (July 8, 23) New Plymouth Routing Cachet. In the 1936-1938 period the New Plymouth P.O. applied a routing cachet "Per Australia-London Air Mail" to airmail submitted for that service. Two types exist, with minor differences. Two (2) covers, one postmarked July 8, 1937 to England and the other July 23, 1937 to Scotland. One cover with Type 1 cachet (5 known) and one with Type 2 cachet (3 known).

1317 NZAMC No. 178c, 178e imageNew Zealand, 1938 (Jan. 2) Auckland-San Francisco PAA Survey Flight (NZAMC 178c, 178e). Three outstanding covers flown on the survey flight leaving Auckland on the 2nd under the command of Capt. Edward Musick. One cover with usual red cachet forwarded from San Francisco to final destination in Victoria, Canada. Other two are large-size PAA Company covers with large black rectangular PAA cachets, one flown to American Samoa, the other to San Francisco and signed by Musick.
