The printing works of Perkins Bacon were destroyed by German bombs on the evening of May 10, 1941. In the spirit of "help thy neighbor", Waterlow & Sons offered to print the stamps of Newfoundland for Perkins Bacon. Accordingly, new plates were made, either from salvaged Perkins Bacon dies or from new Waterlow dies, making the Waterlow printings distinguishable from those of Perkins Bacon. Waterlow's records indicated that their first printings of Newfoundland stamps were made in February of 1942. However, stamps that have been identified as having come from Waterlow printings, have been found used as early as October of 1941—a philatelic mystery.
