Sackett, the Yankee Card Writer, "The most accomplished writer in the World,—now in this City, at Jones' Hotel"; illustration of the writer covering the entirety of the reverse of the cover (extending across the flap as well—a neat printing trick); franked with 1851 3¢ Washington on front tied by SEP 30 Philadelphia, PA, datestamp; addressed to Ercildoun P.O., Chester County, PA, a stunning piece of self-advertising; slight staining along envelope's edge above, but not affecting, portrait; front shows faint reverse offset of magenta "Insured" handstamp, nevertheless Very Fine.

Orsemus Sackett (1826-96) made a prosperous living in the 1850s and early 1860s as a card-writer, "travelling the eastern cities and producing at high speed elegant hand-written visiting cards for discerning customers" (The Sackett Family Association website). This envelope was used to announce his sojourn at Jones' Hotel on Chestnut Street, promoting himself and his penmanship.
