Fred Roberts (son of Field Marshal Lord Roberts), who was later killed at Colenso and received the Victoria Cross posthumously for his bravery.

6608   imageSouth Africa, Siege of Schweizer Reinecke, cover with pre-printed address franked with two ½d green and 1d carmine handstamped "Besieged" (S.G. 5-6) and tied by clear "Schweizer Reinecke, Z.A.R. / 10 Sep 00" postmarks, cover with light age spotting and horizontal fold at base, otherwise Very Fine and rare; one of about ten such souvenir covers known, all with September dates; British forces occupying this town were besieged by Boer troops fleeing the British attacks on Pretoria, the siege lasted from 1 Aug. 1900 to 9 Jan. 1901.

6609   imageSouth Africa, Boer Siege of Ladysmith special illustrated postal card, used with strong strike of blue straightline "Ladysmith Siege Post Office / Feb. 28th 1900." garrison postal service datestamp and civilian c.d.s. postmarked on the last day of siege, repaired tear at top right, otherwise Very Fine; the only recorded example of this card; this mimeographed card shows Boers at "Cesar's Camp" (dated 6 Jan.) and defenders, refers to attack by Boer General Joubert's troops on 5-6 January.

6610   imageSouth Africa, 1900 1d Machadodorp Postal Card, used to Machadodorp with "Barberton, Z.A.R. / 13 Sep 00" datestamp, card creases, Fine usage; the message, from Boer Commando chief at Barberton (then still in Boer hands) reads: "Dear Bresler, The Khakis will be in Town in a few hours. I can see them taking up positions. Its a case of hands up. Goodbye. This card was printed by the "Staatsdrukkerij te velde" at Machadodorp as a provisional issue of postal stationery, nearly all examples were seized by the British and favor cancelled on 20 August, 1900, this is the only recorded postally used example.

6613   imageSouth Africa, Fieldpost to Boer Prisoner at Ladysmith, cover postmarked "Roodepoort / 8 Feb 00" sent to a captive of the British and backstamped Johannesburg the same day, as no exchanges of mail were made, it waited until the end of the siege, when it was picked up by the commander of the relief force of British Cavalry, note "S.A.R." in the address indicating that the Boers thought their occupation permanent and Ladysmith part of Transvaal, cover faulty as one would expect; accompanied by the original enclosure and note within which cover was enclosed stating "Letter picked up by J.F. Brown Murdock just outside Ladysmith, February, 1900; the only such item known in this period.

6617   imageSouth Africa, Official Proclamation Postal Card, printed by the "Staatsdrukkerij te veld" (State Printing Office in the field) on a small press aboard the capital train at Machadodorp as an emergency issue of the "Government Gazette" declaring the capital at Machadodorp on the reverse of Transvaal ½d postal card uprated with ½d adhesive and favor cancelled with "Machadodorp, Z.A.R. / 7 Jun 00" postmark, vertical crease at right through the indicia and stamp, otherwise Very Fine; one of only a few used examples recorded; after the fall of Pretoria on 5 June, 1900 the Transvaal Republic tried to maintain authority over the unoccupied territory with its capital on a train, by 7 June it was parked at Machadodorp, until 14 August when it moved to Barberton, then Nelsprui on 30 August, on 12 Sept. President Krueger fled to Lourenco Marques.

(Arms) R. / Officially Sealed In The" label applied (for lack of any other at this early date in the war) and tied by "Returned Letter Office / Natal / 31 3, 00" datestamp, manuscript. notation states it was finally delivered at the end of March, 1902; no other similar usage has been recorded.

6620   imageSouth Africa, Rhodesian Field Force, cover to Bulawayo from a trooper in the field countersigned by his commanding officer, franked with 1d rose (S.G. 77) paying the soldier's rate, cancelled when processed in Bulawayo on 13 May 1900 and backstamped the sale day, Very Fine and quite scarce; Rhodesian troops were used to retake and defend the Bulawayo-Mafeking railroad through Bechuanaland, to lift the Boer siege of Fort Tuli, and to defend Bulawayo from expected attacks.
