UNOVERPRINTED: 1858 'TASMANIA' reprinted die proof (in 1867) of the engine-turned frame design for the 6d in crimson on thin card (47x88mm) with a Sideface portrait that was used for a number of Colonies. Under close examination the outlined words 'TASMANIA' and 'SIX PENCE' can be discerned within the engine turning at top and base respectively. [This frame design was also used for the Ceylon 4d 8d & 1/9d]

A scarce destination from Tasmania. A very attractive franking of the 'full set' of the 1858 'TASMANIA' issue.

[The addressee, James Maclanachan, arrived in VDL in 1821. Among other things, as a police constable he brought several runaway convicts to justice, for which he was granted 500 acres that he called 'Ballochmyle'. He was later a prize-winning sheep breeder & MP]
