1905 (c.) New Design with Four-Line Heading & 'POST CARD' at Top proof with Medallion Portrait 1d in brown, a couple of tiny imperfections otherwise superb. Believed to be unique. [Absent from Ron Butler's collection. Illustrated at page 39]

Alan Griffiths at page 39 speculates that this design was an essay for the non-scenic issue of 1910. However, that is implausible. Firstly, the Four Figures 1d was introduced for the 1908 Fleet Card & was used thereafter: the Medallion portrait was used exclusively for the 1898-1906 issues (the last printings of which were in 1908). Secondly, from 1906 the UPU accepted postcards with divided address sides to permit a message at the left: these essays retain 'The Address only to be written on this side' in the heading & 'Date stamp on reverse side.]' at L/L, which was not present on post-1908 issues. So, this is the same format as for the 1906 scenic issue & we expect these cards were therefore essays for the 1906 header. It is conceded that the fonts were not adopted for the 1906 issue and are as for the 1910 cards but the weight of evidence is in favour of the earlier production date.

1906 Pictorial Issue with 'POST CARD' at Top Medallion Portrait 1d crimson-lake HG 15var 'Arrowroot Field, Pimpama', 'Botanic Gardens...' (tennis court; underpaid to USA & taxed) 'Jondaryan Woolshed...', fine used. Rare. [These are printed in a distinctive colour not recognised by Higgins & Gage, Phil Collas or Alan Griffiths, despite these three cards being in his collection. We have recorded only a few other examples. In our opinion, they are scarcer than the highly regarded 1905 issue] (3)

[Higgins & Gage have the 1910 & 1911 issues in the wrong order. HG 19/a should be #17/a; #17 should be #18 and #18 should be #17. Note that HG 19 (#17) is a proof] (6)
